In recent years, the ‘Setouchi Triennale’ has gained global attention. Works by Tadao Ando, such as the ‘Chichu Art Museum’, ‘Benesse House’, and ‘ANDO MUSEUM’ are located in Naoshima, the festival’s central venue. ‘Setouchi Retreat Aonagi’ stands alongside these as one of the representative ‘Ando Architectures’ of the Seto Inland Sea. The building, once partially open as a museum, has been renovated. It has been reborn as a small luxury hotel overlooking the Seto Inland Sea.
Architect Tadao Ando

“In the Seto Inland Sea, where more than 500 islands of all sizes float—this building stands on a small hill overlooking that beautiful scenery.
A pool that juts out toward the sea, a sunken court (courtyard) surrounded by sky, water, and greenery, and guest rooms where you can fully enjoy the views of the Seto Inland Sea.
Each individual space has its own fascinating personality, but without them being completely disjointed,
I think we’ve created a place where the gaze and the space itself intersect and overlap—a place that gives people a moment that they can only get here.”
